Anthropic signs first Canada data center deal
Anthropic, the maker of Claude, has leased data center space in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the company's first data center deal in Canada. The developer behind the site, EverWind, says the lease runs 20 years and the first phase will use 95 megawatts of power.
What happened
Reuters reported on 16 October 2026 that Anthropic signed a lease with EverWind for capacity at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia. A syndicated copy of the Reuters story calls it the Claude maker's first data center agreement in Canada.
EverWind made its own announcement the same day. In that announcement the tenant was not named. EverWind described it only as a "leading frontier AI developer," reports Crypto Briefing. So the link to Anthropic comes from the Reuters report. We did not find EverWind confirming it.
The plan is part of a bigger project. CTV News says EverWind called its $10 billion data center proposal the largest private investment in Nova Scotia's history.
Key facts
- Lease: 20 years with an unnamed AI developer, says EverWind, per Crypto Briefing.
- First phase: a 95 megawatt data center, due online by late 2027, according to the same report. A megawatt is a measure of electric power.
- Later: EverWind aims for 420 megawatts in total by 2028.
- Size of the whole plan: more than C$10 billion, with over C$8 billion for the data center campus and about C$2 billion to expand wind power, per Crypto Briefing.
- Jobs: EverWind forecasts about 2,000 construction jobs and 215 permanent jobs. These are forecasts, not results.
- Place: Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, according to the Reuters report.
Background
The plan was first described in public on 16 October 2026. Crypto Briefing reports it. CTV News reports the proposal as a $10 billion project.
Power is the big question for any data center. Crypto Briefing says the project is designed so that its electricity costs do not land on local ratepayers, and that it includes battery storage. It presents this as EverWind's promise. No outside party had checked it in that report.
What it means for you
If you use Claude, this deal does not change your day today. The first phase is not due until late 2027, per EverWind.
Our take: it shows AI companies are looking for new places with room for large amounts of power.
Our take: a lease is not a finished building. The dates are EverWind's plan. Watch for permits, power agreements and whether the later 420 megawatt stage goes ahead.
What happens next
EverWind says the first phase should come online by late 2027, and the full 420 megawatts is the aim for 2028, per Crypto Briefing.
Our take: also watch whether Anthropic or EverWind confirm each other's role in public.
