Context engineering, explained simply

Context engineering is about giving the AI the right background. That includes your instructions, files, past messages and tool results.

It matters because an AI can only use what is in front of it. Too little and it guesses. Too much and it gets confused.

For example, a coding agent works best when it sees the right files and notes. It doesn't need your whole project at once.

It goes beyond writing one good prompt.

On ITG Now, our AI trends page and news stories mention context engineering when tools manage what an agent sees.
