AI for Government & Law, in plain words
AI for government and law is mostly a story about rules: who may build AI, who tests it and who is liable when it goes wrong. This page follows that news with sources, and points to free tools that help with the reading, the records and the hearings. Nothing here is legal advice.
What free AI tools do for legal and public work
None of the tools we cover is made only for lawyers or public offices. These general tools fit that work well, because they keep files on your own machine or show where each answer came from.
Ask questions of long documents. Open Notebook lets you chat with PDFs and videos, and its answers come with citations, so you can check every claim against the page it came from. You host it yourself. With local AI models, the Open Notebook README says nothing leaves your machine.
Transcribe hearings and interviews. Microsoft's VibeVoice turns up to 60 minutes of audio into text and labels who spoke and when, in over 50 languages. Microsoft calls it a research tool and says not to use it in business products without more testing, per the VibeVoice GitHub page.
Private meeting notes. Meetily writes live transcripts and AI summaries and stores recordings on your own computer, which helps when a meeting is confidential.

Use AI with care
AI can misread a document or invent a source that doesn't exist, so check every citation against the original before you rely on it. Follow your office's rules on what data may go into an AI tool. Talk to a qualified lawyer about your own case.
