AI for Media, in plain words
Free AI tools for media help newsrooms, podcasters and video teams transcribe, edit and follow the news faster. Several run on your own computer, so raw tapes and footage stay with you. Every tool below is free to start, and most are fully open source.
What free AI tools do for media
Transcribe a full hour at once. Microsoft's VibeVoice turns up to 60 minutes of audio into text and labels who spoke and when. It works in over 50 languages, and you don't need to tell it which one. It's MIT licensed, but Microsoft says not to use it in business products without more testing, per the VibeVoice GitHub page.
Watch the world on one screen. World Monitor puts news, markets, conflicts, weather events and flights on one live map, with short AI-written news briefs. The core dashboard is free, and a paid Pro plan adds an AI analyst and daily digests. The code is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license.
Edit video in your browser. OpenCut is a free CapCut alternative you can use at opencut.app with nothing to install. OpenReel is a browser video editor with multiple tracks, captions, audio mixing and 4K export, and no export watermark. The OpenReel README says core editing happens on your computer.
Clean green screen shots. CorridorKey pulls people off green or blue screens and keeps fine hair and motion blur. It exports 16-bit and 32-bit EXR files for Nuke, Fusion, DaVinci Resolve and Premiere. Its license lets you use it on paid client work, but you can't resell the tool.
Check before you publish
AI transcripts and news briefs can mishear names or miss context, so check every quote against the tape and every fact against its source before it goes out. Read each tool's license too: CorridorKey's is non-commercial share-alike, and VibeVoice is a research tool for now.
Media itself is in the AI news a lot. In May 2026, Google remade its search, as covered in our AI news for May 2026. The newest stories about news, video and entertainment show up in the list on this page. For more video tools, see our free AI tools for creators.
