AI for Engineers, in plain words
Free AI tools for engineers turn an AI coding helper like Claude Code or Codex into a careful teammate. They plan before they build, check their own work and run on your own machine. Every tool below is open source, so you can read the code before you trust it.
What free AI tools do for engineers
Make video from code. HyperFrames lets your AI helper write a simple web page and then turns it into an MP4 video. It's made by HeyGen under the Apache-2.0 license. The HyperFrames README calls the output deterministic, which means the same input gives the same video every time. You need Node 22, and the AI agent you run it through may need a paid Claude or Codex plan.
Plan, test and review. Superpowers makes your AI ask what you want before it writes code. It splits work into small tasks of 2 to 5 minutes, writes tests first and runs a review between tasks. It's MIT licensed, per its GitHub page.
Find security holes. Cloudflare's Security Audit skill turns your AI helper into a security reviewer. A fresh AI checker tries to prove every finding wrong before it reaches your report. Cloudflare says one run found roughly half of what repeated runs found in total, so run it more than once.
Find the right file faster. CodeGraph builds a local map of your code. In the makers' own tests, Claude Code used 88% fewer tool calls and cost 44% less on average. The CodeGraph README says no data leaves your machine.
Let the AI use a browser. Agent Browser from Vercel Labs lets your AI helper drive a copy of Chrome. It has safety switches, like a list of allowed websites and an "ask me first" step for risky actions.
Before you install
These tools sit on top of an AI coding helper, so you still need one, and some of those cost money. Test numbers above come from each tool's own makers, not from us. Start with one tool on a small project and check what it changes. For a wider list, see our free AI tools for developers.

FAQ
What are the best free AI tools for engineers?
Superpowers for planning and tests, Cloudflare's Security Audit skill for security checks, CodeGraph for finding code faster and HyperFrames for turning code into video. All four are free and open source.
Do these tools send my code anywhere?
CodeGraph says no data leaves your machine. The others run inside your AI helper, so your code goes wherever that helper sends it.
Do I need to pay for anything?
The tools are free, but they run inside an AI coding helper such as Claude Code or Codex, which may need a paid plan.
